Seasonal Diary
Beautiful Indian Summer
(September 10, 2014)In spite of the beautiful weather, this farmer's wife has to keep up the home baking for the holiday cottage and for the workers.................... with 2 hungry men always on the lookout for sweet treats, I find I have to hide cookies made especially for the holiday cottage. They won't even see these, unless they find my hiding place. Lets just say that they are in a tin labelled 'darning'............... that should put them off the scent.
Talking of which, I have a pile of overalls and jeans to patch, and the latest - someone needs an extra pocket sewing onto a favourite working shirt.
The new combine has taken all of harvest to get to know it's driver. I think he is now the boss. He is still having to miss 25% of the crop in order to get the arm near enough to the trailer to empty his load. How annoying is that? Young pheasants have been running for their lives out of the crop.................... the last field was spring wheat, so it was easier to see them as the crop is 'thinner'.
Lots of land preparation now, with 3 men and machines tackling the tilth. Also lots of HLS work to be done with field margins and hedges. Yesterday, at around dawn we saw a Nightjar......................... this is a first.
