Golden Girl(August 25, 2015)
Thankfully we have harvested most of the oats. The 11mm of rain we had recently has put a stop to most things. This gave us an opportunity to nip into Leicester to look at possible replacement kitchen units for the holiday cottage. We went to Magnet - free advertising here............ as that is where our hardwearing 1980's units came from. They now look Retro, which they are of course, but soft closing doors will be one of the improvements......... not to mention mixer taps.......... watch this space!
All our neighbours have been baling and carting bales, so lots of big traffic movements. Our straw is baled by contractors, or neighbours, who buy it for their winter livestock bedding needs. We of course remember the days of burning whole fields of straw. How things have changed again. Dare I mention Blackgrass? That burning may well have kept it at bay back in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
More old sheds are being cleared out, and we recently housed 9 lovely chaps & Faye on a stopover for their charity bikeride. They had cycled from Doncaster that day, and arrived at 6pm. We made a 'dormitory' for them in the Farm Office. They are raising money for the Charity they set up in the name of their dear friend Pete Westropp, who was killed in a tragic accident 4 years ago. I gather that over £6000 was raised.
150 acres left to harvest, and then the hard work starts!
